Just-In-Time (JIT)

Just-In-Time is a method of inventory strategy implemented by companies to increase efficiency and decrease waste by holding as little stock as possible and manufacturing products as and when the customer requires them.

 

Car manufacturers commonly implement JIT within their production process with parts arriving to make the cars arriving when needed, not before and not after.

 

The advantages to JIT are that you have more warehouse space as stock is not held in large quantities prior to an order, also the production runs are typically shorter meaning the manufacturer can change from one job to the other with relative ease. Finally, companies spend less on raw material, plastic in our case as just enough is bought for the job in hand.

 

The disadvantages to JIT are that if one supplier breaks the chain of parts being supplied, the entire process shuts down. For example, when delivering to car manufacturers if a supplier of one part was delayed then the entire car production line would halt, costly for all parties involved. In addition, manufacturers can forecast orders to an extent, but there can be delays for all sorts of reasons. For example, an injection moulder typically has a set number of injection moulding machines, if these are all running and booked out with customers and then suddenly a customer requiring products immediately orders, it becomes a balance of which customers needs are more urgent. Ideally, this is something we would avoid as all customers deserve the same quality service
